Brief history of Anesthesia Technicians Department

The Anaesthetic Technician School at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria, is part of the hospital’s broader commitment to training skilled healthcare professionals. UBTH, established on May 12, 1973, as a federal tertiary healthcare institution, evolved from the Midwest Medical Centre, founded in 1971 under the leadership of Brigadier General Samuel Ogbemudia. The hospital was designed to complement the University of Benin and provide specialized medical services while fostering education and research.
The Anaesthetic Technician training program is housed within UBTH’s Institute of Health Technology (IHT), which offers various programs to develop mid-level healthcare personnel. While specific records detailing the exact founding date of the Anaesthetic Technician School are limited, it emerged as part of the hospital’s expansion of training initiatives in the late 20th century. The program was established to address the growing need for skilled anaesthetic support staff in surgical and critical care settings, reflecting UBTH’s role as a pioneer in healthcare education in Nigeria.
The curriculum focuses on equipping students with practical skills in anaesthesia administration, patient monitoring, and equipment management, aligning with modern healthcare demands. Over the years, the school has contributed to the hospital’s reputation as a leading training center, producing graduates who support anaesthetic teams across Nigeria.
