Welcome to Institution of Health Science & Technology

Welcome to the Orthopedics Cast Technology Department

The application of engineering principles to solve biological and medical problems for the purpose of improving health care.

Welcome note from the
HOD of Orthopedics Cast Technology Department

The School of Biomedical Engineering Technology at the Institute of Health Sciences and Technology, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), is a pioneer in advancing healthcare technology education in Nigeria. We are committed to training the next generation of biomedical engineers who will drive innovation in the healthcare industry.

Brief history of Orthopedics Cast Technology Department

In the year 2008, the management of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital(UBTH) as a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Health(FMoH)
keyed into the ongoing effort of the government in addressing the identified skills gap needed to be developed locally, on capacity building
for equipment maintenance and management. The management of UBTH took the initiative to establish the school of Biomedical Engineering, UBTH, then setup a committee to work out modalities to establish the
school of Biomedical Engineering also known as (NHETC) with the directive to analyse the following items of reference:

  • To liaise with relevant bodies for information, licence and other relevant terms for the establishment of the school.
  • To work out modalities for the provision of basic needs, adequate staffing and initial intake of the school.
  • To set standards and operational guidelines for the effective running of the
    school.
  • To advance on future development of the school.

The report of the committee was submitted to the hospital management in September 2008 in which the School of Biomedical Engineering was identified feasible. The school has continued to admit and graduate students and was granted interim accreditation by National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) with effect from 1st October 2011.
In December 2013 the Board was invited for full accreditation visit after which interim accreditation was granted for the school for one year.
Then in August 2015, the Board was invited with a view of gaining full accreditation. The visit took place in September 2015 and full accreditation was issued to the school.
In August 2020, the school seeked approval from NBTE to run the higher national diploma (HND) in Biomedical Engineering Technology which was approved by hoard in 1st march 2020.
July 2023 NBTE visited for the re-accreditation of the ND and full accreditation of the HND programme. And both programme were accredited by the board.
Recently the hospital management merged all the schools in the hospital to become Institute of Health Science and Technology, which made the school of biomedical engineering to become department of Biomedical Engineering Technology in the institute now.

Our Programme Description

OPCT Department currently has four (4) levels:

  • ND 1
  • ND 2
  • HND 1
  • HND 2

The programme is structured to last two (2) years (4 Semesters) for ND1 to ND2 and another two (2) years (4 Semesters) for HND1 to HND2, making a total of four (4) years (8 Semesters)

At the end of the National Diploma (ND), successful students will be awarded National Diploma in Environmental Health Technology, after which the trainee can proceeds to HND programme for another 2 years and on successful completion of the HND, a Higher National Diploma in Environmental Health Technology is awarded.

Accreditation and Recognition of our certificates

Both the ND and HND of the programme have been accredited by National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and WAHEB and the ND and HND Certificates enjoy global recognition and acceptance. After graduation from the programme, the student is eligible to participate in National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) for one (1) year.
